An Evening With Steven Brust

An Evening With Steven Brust (Atomic Array Special Edition)

A couple months ago, Patrick DeLise suggested we invite author Steven Brust on the show. So, being fans ourselves, we did!

Steven’s first work, Jhereg, was released in 1983. Since then, Steven has released a total of 13 stories that follow Jhereg’s protagonist, the smart-mouthed assassin Vlad Taltos. In addition, he has written The Khaavren Romances, which at set in the same world - though follow different characters.

Sprinkled amongst the novels set in Dragaera, you will also find a number of other Brustian offerings, including a novel based on the Firefly television series, called My Own Kind of Freedom.

Steven doesn’t just know his way around a good story, he also plays a number of instruments - and has been known to play them, and even sing, from time to time at the various fiction and fandom events he attends. He is a part of the band Cats Laughing, which even received a mention by Chris Claremont in Star Trek: Debt of Honor.

You can keep up to date on what Steven is up to by visiting The Dream Cafe.

How could I forget playing GURPS with John M. “Mike” Ford in the late 80’s?

Apparently you could not, so you did not, Steven. All’s well that ends in a show page mention.

Calling all GMs/DMs in the Mini-Apple area… A chain smoking genius needs an RPG group STAT!

I’ve been pinging my Twin City Gamerati to see if anyone has an opening at their table.

Should I be worried that the three of us are the only ones to comment here?

Nah - it’s common that we only get a couple comments. We’re an audio podcast, not a blog, after all. :)

Okay, so, someone did hear it?

793 people have, as of this morning…

I enjoyed the interview with Steve! Another great AA guys!

Cool, Ed. That’s good. Thanks, Patrick.

I will comment - and I will listen - and I will read, as soon as Steven gets another book out for me. I have been hooked since 1987, get to writin’!

Halfway through the interview and loving it! I’m a fan of Brokedown Palace who was slow getting on the Taltos bandwagon (http://mythopoeicrambling.blogspot.com/2012/04/j-is-for-pseudodragon.html). I’m giving a final tomorrow and turning in grades, but I’ll be back later in the week with some comments and questions. For now, I note that of course Steven Brust is a Patrick O’Brian fan! I’m convinced that great tastes tend to run together. :-)

That sounds about right, Theodric. And… I love your knack for spelling…

Any set date for a new taltos book?

No, still working on it.

Great interview! Thanks for an enjoyable diversion from my drudging work day!

Oh, and the convention Steve will be attending in California is: Convolution and will be held the first weekend in November in the San Francisco Bay Area. :)

Thanks, Chris! Let’s go ahead and give that link: http://www.con-volution.com/index.php

Awww…… Man. Oh well, I will just have to reread the old ones again lol btw mr. Brust your books are the only one’s I can do that with. I’m a big forgotten realms fan but when trying reread those books after a few pages I give up. But I can’t get enough of the taltos series even I read them a hundred times the stories always keep me interested and wanting more. Thanks alot for the great reads and I’m looking forward to some more.

Thanks, Bodythief. Kind of you to say.

This. Was. AWESOME.

Thank you so much for this. It was entertaining and incredibly enlightening even for a life-long fan of Brust’s works.

Very glad you liked it, Jascha. Have you listened to the Array before, or was this your first episode?

First time listening to your site. I really enjoyed this! Kept it on in the background while I fiddled around and just really enjoyed the whole experience. Mr. Brust, you’re one of my top three favorite authors and pretty much the only one my Dad will read anymore besides Heinlein. Can’t wait to read your new novel next year! (And I loved Agyar, even if I was only about 12 when I read it.)

I agree 100%, Jenn. Next year can’t come fast enough.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. :)

Thanks kindly, Jenn.

First time on this site as well, but I intend to raid your archived posts ASAP.

Loved the interview! Mr. Brust, sir, you must do more interviews; we life-long fans love to hear you tell your life stories.
Also, I can’t find the Tor version of THREE MUSKETEERS! Anyone have an ISBN? :(

Nevermind, found it on Amazon. Wow, that IS a bad cover! :P

Mr. Brust after hearing your voice narrate wonderful stories for years, its an absolute pleasure to hear the real thing. I can’t thank you enough for the years of incredible novels.

Liam: My copy is at home, and I”m not, but LibraryThing tells me the ISBN is 0812536029 / 9780812536027.

I was sad to discover that Jhereg is not available as an eBook. I went to buy it on my Kindle after listening to the podcast (well most of it, not quite finished yet) and it wasn’t there. I was sad.

You are my favorite author, followed closely by Ilona Andrews. I cannot recall how many times I have re-read each of the Taltosh books, but the count keeps getting higher every year.
I read on Wiki that you have conjestive heart failure, needing a defibrilator. If this is true I wish you the best.
