Assuming this isn’t some sort of joke that I’m missing… and if I am I apologize…
I guess when you take chances on accessing your memory in order to share some of the many things you’ve learned or think you’ve learned, you sometimes make mistakes, Jarrod. And when you do, you figure people will just understand that no one is perfect. You should really hope this is the case, because you just scorned me for misusing a Nadsat term (Nadsat was deliberately Russian flavored to play on the cold war tensions of the time when the book was penned) and yet you were actually wrong in your understanding of the cant. But hey, I would never consider calling you stupid for goofing up on something so trivial. Mystifyingly rude? Yes. Beyond comprehension. I’ll just assume you have some issues with how to communicate civilly with people sometimes and suggest that you’ll be better served in life by just dropping it down a gear. Even with internet strangers like me.
I came to Clockwork Orange through the movie as a teen but then read the book and did a few reports on it, and the book includes a glossary of Nadsat terms right there in the back. Horror Show means Well and it means Good.
I do believe that “Prat” is an English term for “ass”, also used to describe someone as stupid and arrogant.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
I’ll stop now and slink away.
I would have written a dissertation on the usage of Johnson, but Derek is so obviously awesome a name, coming down to us in English from the Anglo-Saxon for the theod-ric or people-rule[r], that I got distracted. Oh, and before anyone jumps on me, yes the TH above is Thorn. Latin alphabet limitations and what-not.
Incidentally, the codename of a member of the Soviets’ crack special ops team Red October which appeared in GI Joe issues 6 & 7 was also Horror Show. Having never seen or read A Clockwork Orange, I always assumed Marvel came up with the wordplay on the Russian themselves. Now, finding out about this added layer to the reference, I’m not sure whether it makes me think more highly of it or less so.
FWIW though, the Russian word for dog is sobaka. So suck on that Lucas.
Of course Theodric is a name well-known to mean “pillar of wisdom”, being a compound of the Ancient Huxtablan “theo-” meaning “son of the physician” and “-dric” being a shortening of “doric” or “pillar”, from Old… well, Doric.
Also, “Bree-yark!” is Goblin for douche-nozzle. Use this information wisely, and only for good - not evil.
Internet comments: when you care enough to say the very worst..
Welcome back! It’s good to have an Array on my iPod again. Any hints as to the next episode’s topic?
James
Thanks, James!
A hint? Well what do the Lone Ranger and the Phantom of the Opera have in common other than insufferable dumpster breath?

You got “Clockwork Orange” wrong beyond belief. In the movie, they do not use the phrase “horror show” as a synonym for “very good.” They are using the Russian word “horosho” which actually means “very good” in Russian. How could you have said something so stupid!?
