Colonial Gothic RPG (Atomic Array 001)
Colonial Gothic RPG (Atomic Array 001)
It’s the 4th of July, and we’re celebrating by launching a new podcast about the games we love to play. In this first episode, we speak with Richard Iorio of Rogue Games.
Colonial Gothic
If your fantasy game sometimes feels like it’s constantly retreading old ground, give Colonial Gothic a read. This historical setting, grounded in colonial America on the eve of the War of Independence, will seem familiar to anyone who has studied the founding of the United States. Colonial Gothic captures the feel of that era, while exploiting the holes in our knowledge to add elements of the supernatural. We especially liked how Rogue Games has used little known historical facts and cultural elements to twist colonial history, bringing out a fantastic feel. With Colonial Gothic, truth truly is stranger than fiction.
Ed’s Pick: Rabble in Arms
Rone’s Rant: Edition wars
Colonial Gothic: Secrets
Some of the strange truths of colonial America are expanded in Secrets, the first Colonial Gothic supplement. The excellent bestiary is backed up by a robust section on secret societies and organizations, such as the Knights Templar and the Freemasons. There is a lot of material in this book, and it is obvious from the start that Rogue Games did their homework. Check out the bibliography for some solid sources for research.
Make sure to check out the New World Almanack.
Contest!
We’re giving away two Colonial Gothic book sets - each containing the Colonial Gothic Rulebook and Colonial Gothic: Secrets. Listen to find out what you must do to enter!

Great job on the podcast guys. This is an innovative and informative podcast that really addresses an area of the gaming industry that is seriously lacking, ie the non-mainstream games. I’ve never heard of American Gothic but after listening to your podcast I must say I am definitely intrigued.
I am really looking forward to future episodes and have already added you to my feed reader. Good luck.
This podcast is very good. I walked to work this morning so I could listen to it and I got almost entirely through it. I hadn’t heard of this game before but I’m interested to see the mechanics of it. You guys talked about adding something analogous to Final Fantasy cut-scenes into the game and I’m very interested in seeing how that lines up.
Great podcast. Richard came across really well, and even though I’m English and have no idea of the American War of Independence (we don’t get taught it at school) but I’m even tempted to get the PDFs.
Loved the version wars comment - couldn’t agree more.
Only other comment would be to see if you can get a leveller tool (e.g. http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelator ) as sometimes I had to turn it up full volume and then got blasted.
@Sam, we noticed the leveling issue as well. Not to fear, it will be taken care of in Episode 002. Thanks for taking the time to post about it. I hope you’ll continue to listen!
Great stuff guys… Rone should’ve pimped this earlier on Sinister!! But, he’s too busy with the ladies… It’s ok, I understand.. : P
Thank you for providing this podcast, it really rejuvenates the gaming community, I appreciate what you guys are doing here.
Cheers-
Sean
