Adventures in Oz (Atomic Array 059)

F. Douglas Wall created a fantastic game set in the land of Dorothy and the Emerald City, the Gnome King and the Scarecrow. In Adventures in Oz, each player controls a character participating in stories set in Oz. We asked Mr. Wall to walk us down the Yellow Brick Road - to take us on a journey through this magical dreamscape made roleplaying game.

Idyllic opening of Wizard of Oz? You mean depression-era dustbowl poverty-stricken Kansas? Yikes…

But the film made depression-era dustbowl poverty-stricken Kansas seem homey and loving, like The Waltons starring in the musical Oklahoma!. Now, the HBO show Carnivale on the other hand…

Yeah. Wizard of Oz was no Carnivale, for sure.

Again, a good episode of what sounds like a wonderful game. I have to say, I know little about Oz other than the movie and a short journal article I read in a political science class on the political commentary, analogy of the book in the populist era.

Thanks, Derek. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Very cool episode. I love games based on pieces in the public domain. It allows easy access for every kid in my classroom. They can find Oz on the net in its entirety.

And, this seems like Oz done in a way Baum would have liked. I would love to play this with my kids. The deathless Oz, the friendship angle…love it. I hope to check out this game in the future for sure.

Many thanks for the comment, Pete. We knew this game would speak to parents out there who wanted their kids to have a pulpless introduction to RPGs.

A college professor asked my old friend and co-writer Giovani Saintiny to read his essay to the class. It was titled The Public Domain is Where the Muses Live. Eye opening stuff. It is a wondrous, inspirational realm on par with any Oz, is it not?

Top Stuff Guys!

So good to hear this come to light. :)

A little bird told us about AiO, Craig. :)

Hey, many thanks again for the mention! The Platonic Beret intro you did was awesome (as was everything else on the show–par for the course for you guys).

Rock, Mr. Mallon.

Will I see you at Paizocon again this year?

Thanks, Dave!

le boom.

Unfortunately no Paizocon this year. I have no money right now, and I’m back trying to finish my degree. Le boom indeed.

Le bummer.

Le sigh.
